Mary completed her BCL (Law with French Law) in UCD, Dublin, having spent her third year in Université Paris II (Panthéon-Assas). She has since completed a PhD under the supervision of Professor Colin Scott at UCD that examined the question of whether the precautionary principle is viable as a legal principle. In particular, the thesis focused upon issues of legitimacy and justiciability, with a case study on the precautionary principle's role in relation to genetically modified organisms in the European Union.
Mary arrived at the Law School in August 2012, where she teaches equity and environmental law and is coordinator of the research project modules. She is involved in a range of modules and activities focussed on skills for LLM and PhD students. Along with Dr. Marek Martyniszyn and external colleagues, she organised and ran a skills workshop for UCD and QUB law PhD students in December 2014. In 2012/13 she was Co-Director of External Affairs, as well as Advisor of Studies for Law with Politics students.
Mary is also a member of the Irish Environmental Law Association, and a member of the Irish Association of Law Teachers. She was a national reporter for the 2104 Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law.
