Law and Constitutional Change is a collection of some of the best papers presented at the 25th British Legal History Conference, co-hosted by Queen’s University Belfast and the Irish Legal History Society in July 2022.

The volume examines the role that law plays when countries experience major constitutional upheaval, exploring the interaction between law and politics across different jurisdictions and legal traditions. The conference theme, “Law and Constitutional Change”, was inspired by the decade of anniversaries in Ireland (2012-2023) commemorating events from a century ago that began with the Home Rule Crisis and ended with the partition of the country.

The book situates these changes within a wider British, Irish, and international context, offering insights relevant to contemporary debates such as Brexit and its longer-term implications.
