Prof Colin Harvey appointed as new Commission Member for Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission

7 August, 2023

Professor Colin Harvey from Queen’s University Belfast is one of six new Commission Members appointed to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

Queen's University School of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Colin Harvey to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission. This appointment stands as a distinguished honour, reflecting not only Professor Harvey's expertise and lifelong commitment to human rights and equality but also his exceptional contributions to the academic community at Queen's.

Professor Harvey, currently serving as Professor of Human Rights Law at Queen's University Belfast and as the Director of the Human Rights Centre, has expressed sincere gratitude for this appointment, acknowledging it as both a professional accolade and a personal milestone.

“On a personal note, this is particularly meaningful recognition of my lifelong work for human rights and equality on this island. I want to take the opportunity to thank publicly all those who expressed solidarity and support during difficult recent times. It made a genuine difference and was a welcome reminder of the collective values that underpin this vital work. I hope to be of assistance to the Commission during what is a significant moment for human rights and equality on the island of Ireland. I regard this appointment as further acknowledgement of the outstanding human rights and equality work ongoing at Queen’s.”

At Queen's University School of Law, we share in Professor Harvey's aspiration for continued excellence and leadership in the field of human rights. This appointment signifies a meaningful acknowledgment of his unwavering dedication and the broader ongoing commitment to human rights and equality at our institution.

Professor Harvey's words encapsulate his feelings best: "It is a great honour and privilege to join such a strong team working to advance human rights and equality." His appointment to the Commission aligns seamlessly with his vision and the values we foster at Queen's. We are confident that he will further enrich the Commission's efforts during this vital period for human rights and equality on the island of Ireland. We also take this moment to recognise the outstanding human rights and equality work that continues to be a hallmark of our academic community.

On behalf of Queen's University School of Law, we extend our warmest congratulations to Professor Harvey and look forward to his continued achievements in his new role with the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
