Accountability After Economic Crisis

Project Commenced: 01/09/2016

Project Completion Date: 31/12/2019

Project PI/s

Iosif Kovras (City University)

Other staff or partners

Kieran McEvoy (QUB) CoI, Neophytos Loizides (Kent) CoI

Project Description

The project draws upon the theory and practice of transitional justice to explore how a range of countries dealt with the economic crisis after 2008. The countries studied are Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Cyprus and Iceland. Different countries approach the 'dealing with the past components of the crisis in different ways including truth commissions or parliamentary inquiries, prosecutions or de facto impunity. The project investigates the relevance of the transitional justice framework to explaining how societies deal with the causes of economic meltdown in times of crisis. It also assesses the relevant merits and demerits of truth, prosecutions, apologies and other forms of legal and political accountability in such contexts.
